Ancest-Us series(1/10), 14th August. These works merge the past and the present, the dead and the living. It is where we are from and where we are going. It is our identity and an evolution of culture.
In African traditional culture masks were not meant for hiding the face. They were how beings of the spirit world manifested, ancestors, gods, goddesses etc. They believed that whenever a human who was worthy put an African mask on their physical bodies were possessed by these spirits. The spirits help solve their problems. The masks I create today serve as a reminder of what our culture was and what it is now, the masks speak to me.
